UN and Qatar push for Libya
security deal
The United Nations and Qatar have
urged Libyan authorities to fast-track a security agreement seen as vital for
advancing the country’s political roadmap and restoring stability.
The call came after a meeting in
Tripoli on Thursday between Stephanie Koury, Deputy Special Representative of
the UN Secretary-General for Political Affairs, and Qatar’s Ambassador to
Libya, Khalid Al-Dosari. The talks focused on recent political and security
developments.
In a statement, the UN Support
Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said both sides emphasized the urgency of reaching
consensus among Libyan security actors to create conditions conducive to a
UN-backed political settlement.

Koury highlighted that the initiative aligns with priorities set out by Special Representative Hanna Tetteh in her August 21 briefing to the UN Security Council, where she underscored the need for parallel progress on political and security fronts.
She also thanked Qatar for its
continued support of the UN mission and its role in facilitating dialogue through
constructive diplomacy.
