National Museum of Qatar gets GSAS platinum rating for operational sustainability

The National Museum of Qatar has been awarded the Platinum rating under the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) Operations certification, further establishing Qatar Museums as a global leader in sustainable cultural institutions.

The Platinum certification, granted by the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD), marks a world first for a museum under the GSAS Operations framework, following a rigorous assessment of the museum’s operational sustainability.

Commenting on the achievement, Qatar Museums CEO Mohammed Saad Al Rumaihi said: “Advancing from Gold to Platinum under GSAS Operations is a significant milestone in our sustainability journey. This accomplishment reflects Qatar Museums’ long-term commitment to embedding environmental responsibility across all aspects of our institutions — from building design to daily operations. As cultural leaders, we are proud to contribute to Qatar National Vision 2030 while setting new global benchmarks for sustainable museum management.”

The Platinum award was presented at the NMoQ Auditorium on Qatar Environment Day, highlighting the nation’s ongoing efforts to protect and preserve the environment.

This recognition builds on NMoQ’s earlier achievement of a GSAS 4-Star rating for design and build certification in 2018, prior to the museum’s official opening, and underscores Qatar Museums’ leadership in advancing sustainable cultural infrastructure both locally and internationally.

Fahad Abdulla A Mana, Head of Project Management Oversight at Qatar Museums, added: “Achieving the GSAS Platinum rating is a proud moment reflecting our teams’ dedication to integrating environmental responsibility into every aspect of operations. This milestone strengthens Qatar Museums’ position as a leader in sustainability and sets a global benchmark for museums to follow.”

Dr Yousef Alhorr, Chairman of GORD, said: “Upgrading from Gold to Platinum demonstrates how cultural institutions can successfully balance heritage preservation with environmental sustainability. Designing a sustainable building is one challenge, but operating it efficiently over time is far greater. NMoQ’s achievement showcases institutional maturity and ongoing commitment to peak environmental performance under GSAS Operations.”
