Qatari projects provide safe drinking water to thousands in Senegal
More than 70,000 people across Senegal are set to
benefit from new water and sanitation infrastructure delivered by Qatar Charity, in an initiative aimed
at expanding access to safe drinking water and improving living conditions in
underserved communities.
The projects, valued at more than QR4 million, were
handed over during ceremonies attended by administrative and local authorities,
community representatives and local partners.
Water infrastructure across seven regions
The initiative spans Touba, Kaolack, Saint-Louis, Dakar,
Matam, Ziguinchor and Kolda, combining household-level support with broader
community water infrastructure.
As part of the programme, 49 water tanks were
distributed and installed for vulnerable families in Touba neighbourhoods
facing limited access to water services. The initiative also included the
construction and handover of 246 wells in targeted communities.
Together, the projects are expected to improve access to
drinking water while contributing to better health and sanitation conditions
for thousands of families.

Local authorities said the projects address pressing
community needs while supporting wider efforts to strengthen essential services
and local development.
Community-led approach
At a handover ceremony in Touba, Deputy Administrative
Governor Daouda Mbow praised the preparatory work carried out before
implementation.
He said a joint committee involving representatives of
Touba Municipality, local officials and social institutions, together with
neighbourhood and village representatives, identified beneficiaries through a
transparent process designed to ensure assistance reached those most in need.
According to Mbow, the participatory approach helped
strengthen the project’s impact and contributed to meeting its humanitarian and
development goals.
He also praised Qatar Charity for its continued support
for communities in Senegal, saying its humanitarian and development programmes
have contributed to tangible improvements in living conditions.
Mbow urged beneficiaries to use the newly provided
infrastructure responsibly and ensure proper maintenance so that the facilities
continue serving communities over the long term.
Beyond immediate relief
Qatar Charity said the projects form part of a broader
development strategy focused on delivering sustainable solutions to
water-access challenges.
