Qatar to set up M.F. Husain Museum to pay tribute to great artist

A new museum dedicated to the life and work of the renowned Indian modernist M.F. Husain is set to open in Doha on November 28, 2025, under the auspices of Qatar Foundation. The Lawh Wa Qalam Museum will be the first institution of its kind to focus solely on Husain's legacy, showcasing a diverse collection that includes paintings, tapestries, photographs, films, installations, and poetry.

The museum will offer a comprehensive overview of Husain’s illustrious career, spanning from his rise in the 1950s to his passing in 2011. The design of the building itself is inspired by a 2008 sketch by Husain, adding a personal touch to the structure. Among the highlights of the collection will be Husain’s famous Arab civilisation series, commissioned by Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, as well as one of his last works, Seeroo fi al ardh (2009), which will have a dedicated gallery space.

Located within Education City in Doha, the museum spans 3,000 m² and is positioned within Qatar Foundation’s campus, which also hosts branches of Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Northwestern, and Texas A&M.

Born in 1913 or 1915, Husain was a key figure in the Bombay Progressive Artists Group (1947) alongside fellow artists F.N. Souza and S.H. Raza. He later became a Qatari citizen, further strengthening his ties to the region.
