Qatar delegate emphasizes collective action to end exploitation in sport

Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, participated in the opening session of a high-level dialogue co-organized by Qatar, the Principality of Monaco, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and Mission 89.

The event took place on the sidelines of the Second World Summit for Social Development under the theme “Copenhagen to Doha: Tackling Vulnerability and Exploitation Linked to Sport – Supporting Safe and Inclusive Pathways for Youth to Realise Their Dreams.”

In her address, Sheikha Alya emphasized that the dialogue comes at a pivotal moment following the adoption of the Doha Political Declaration, where world leaders reaffirmed the transformative power of sport in advancing inclusion, social cohesion, and sustainable development, and in integrating sport into national development strategies.

She highlighted that the declaration underscores investment in sports infrastructure, youth engagement, and inclusive access as essential pillars to achieve the global goals of eradicating poverty, ensuring decent work, and fostering social inclusion.

The Qatari envoy noted that the dialogue seeks to expose and address practices that undermine the integrity and social purpose of sport. She stressed the importance of collective action and innovative measures to eliminate exploitation in the sports sector—particularly efforts to combat human trafficking, protect children and young athletes, and promote safe and inclusive sporting environments that uphold values such as discipline, teamwork, and fair play.

Reaffirming Qatar’s commitment, Sheikha Alya stated that sport stands at the heart of the social development agenda. She described sport as a powerful instrument for peace, sustainable development, and cross-cultural understanding, as well as a means to promote healthy lifestyles, prevent violence, create decent job opportunities, empower youth, and fight crime and drug abuse.
