Qatar hosts Ukrainian delegation in efforts to end Ukraine-Russian war

Doha has reiterated its commitment to advancing peace in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, meeting top Ukrainian officials in the capital on Tuesday.

The visiting delegation included Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, and Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council.

According to Qatar’s foreign ministry, discussions covered the latest developments in the conflict, possible pathways to a peaceful resolution, and broader areas of mutual cooperation. The Ukrainian side expressed appreciation for Doha’s support, particularly in its humanitarian efforts to reunite Ukrainian children with their families.

Yermak later wrote on X that the talks also explored “shared interests in the field of security and defence” and ways to strengthen relations between Doha and Kyiv.

Qatar has played a central role in mediating the safe return of children separated by the war, which has raged since 2022. The first reunification took place on October 16, 2023, when four children were repatriated from Russia. The most recent effort, announced last week, reunited four children with relatives in Ukraine and three with their families in Russia—bringing the total number of children reunited under Qatar’s mediation to 107.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously thanked Qatar’s Amir for spearheading the initiative, which has also led to agreements on restoring documents, exchanging lists of missing personnel, and facilitating the delivery of letters from prisoners of war.

Meanwhile, international diplomatic pressure to end the conflict continues. On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Washington was prepared to impose economic sanctions on Russia if President Vladimir Putin did not agree to a peace deal—remarks that followed Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15.
