Qatar Charity provides care to Ghanaian heart patients
Qatar Charity, in partnership with
the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), has successfully concluded its
third annual congenital cardiac catheterisation project, delivering life-saving
care to 40 patients, mostly children, suffering from congenital heart defects.
The week-long mission, held from August
17 to 24, focused on treating complex conditions including Patent Ductus
Arteriosus (PDA), Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), Atrial Septal Defect (ASD),
and Pulmonary Stenosis (PS) – commonly referred to as “hole-in-heart” diseases.
Left untreated, these conditions can be fatal.
Using advanced catheterisation
techniques, the medical team performed minimally invasive procedures that
avoided open-heart surgery, ensuring faster recovery and reduced risks.
Dr. Abdul-Samad Tanko, CEO of UGMC,
hailed the collaboration:
“Beyond the 40 lives saved, the
greatest impact is the transfer of skills. Our local team gained hands-on
experience from world-class specialists, building sustainable capacity for
advanced cardiac care in Ghana.”
The visiting team was led by Professor
Mohammad Tawfiq Numan of Texas University, a renowned interventional
cardiologist, who praised the synergy:
“The success of this mission is a testament
to true collaboration. The professionalism and dedication of UGMC’s team were
exceptional.”

“Together with UGMC, we are not only
saving lives but building hope and a healthier future for Ghana.”
This initiative reflects a growing
partnership between UGMC and Qatar Charity, aimed at treating critical patients
while strengthening local expertise. The successful completion of this year’s
programme reinforces both institutions’ commitment to advancing healthcare in
Ghana and the wider region.
