Qatar accelerates solar power expansion to meet QNV 2030 targets

Qatar expanding solar power to align with country's renewable energy strategy

Qatar is ramping up its renewable energy push with three major solar power plants already operational and more projects in development, aligning with the Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030 and the country’s Renewable Energy Strategy.

Eng. Mohammed Abdullah Bu Kashisha, Monitoring Engineer at Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa), told Qatar TV that the strategy—developed with input from more than 200 entities over two years—aims to boost clean energy generation, cut carbon emissions, and advance environmental and economic goals under the Third National Development Strategy (2024–2030).

The flagship project, Al-Kharsaah Solar Power Plant, spans 10 square kilometres west of Doha and features 1.8 million solar panels with a capacity of 800 MW, supplying around 5% of Qatar’s electricity. Over its 25–26 year lifespan, it is expected to prevent about 26 million metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

This year also saw the launch of the Ras Laffan Solar Plant in Ras Laffan Industrial City and the Mesaieed Solar Plant in the southeast, together adding 875 MW of capacity and projected to cut 30 million metric tonnes of CO₂ during their operational life.

Looking ahead, Qatar has unveiled plans for its most ambitious project yet—the Al-Dhakhira Solar Power Plant, designed to generate 2,000 MW. Once complete, it will rank among the world’s largest solar facilities, marking a major step in the country’s clean energy transition.

“These projects demonstrate Qatar’s commitment to reducing reliance on hydrocarbons, diversifying the economy, and driving sustainable growth,” Bu Kashisha said.

Beyond utility-scale initiatives, Kahramaa has introduced the BeSolar Service, enabling households, businesses, and farms to install rooftop solar systems. Customers can generate their own electricity, feed surplus power back into the grid, and offset monthly bills through net metering.

“This initiative empowers every household and business to play a role in achieving Qatar’s renewable energy goals,” Bu Kashisha added.

Qatar’s growing solar portfolio underscores its ambition to position itself as a global leader in clean energy.
